(D1, MM) Back to School

"Practice, mostly. Had a few days off because the folks took me and Sarah camping. It was...I'd rather not've. But it's how it is, and at least the scenery was good.

"Heard a really good mariachi band on the way back, too. Might have to try some of that."

"I'll have to practice my Spanish." he said. "But, that could be fun. It's been a long time since I've been camping. Mostly, I just remember sitting around the fire."

Cam wasn't known for being consistent with classes. But he usually tried to show up for the first couple weeks to give it a try. How long he stayed depended on what kind of bullshit the teachers or other students were on.

He came in with a hoodie on, his hands in the pockets and his eyes scanning the room. He clocked Astrid but she looked busy so he just sat down in a desk near her without interrupting. Music could be very faintly heard coming through his headphones.

"I'll have to practice my Spanish." he said. "But, that could be fun. It's been a long time since I've been camping. Mostly, I just remember sitting around the fire."

Mariana picked up Mariachi and Spanish in a conversation and chuckled. She found it funny that people would think that music can be language lock. "You can try writing a Mariachi song in English."

Astrid pushed off the wall, moving over to the empty seat and turning it slightly to sit on facing the back of the chair instead of sitting properly. Resting her head on the top of the chair as she did so.

"Yo" she offered, looking at the laptop then back at the boy "thanks. I was expecting to have to wait for the teacher before finding out where I'm allowed to sit."

"Hey." he awkwardly waves again as she sits down. "Yeah, you should be fine to sit there, there's a seat or two closer to the front of the class if you'd rather. I used to sit in the front, but there a few tripping incidents, so I moved to the back." Simon leans back to show the cord connecting a large plastic covered brick on the ground between his laptop and the outlet.

Turning back he quietly adds, "I'm Simon by the way."

"We did do a lot of that, yeah."

Mariana picked up Mariachi and Spanish in a conversation and chuckled. She found it funny that people would think that music can be language lock. "You can try writing a Mariachi song in English."

He considered that for a moment, humming quietly. "That would be an interesting challenge."

"Hey." he awkwardly waves again as she sits down. "Yeah, you should be fine to sit there, there's a seat or two closer to the front of the class if you'd rather. There was a smile.

"Astrid is my name. Nice to meet you Simon, you a local?"

"There are English Polkas, though." he shrugged. "I wouldn't be surprised if there were English Mariachi songs. I think it depends on what the song is about. The story."

Simon looks a bit sheepish at her comment, "Yeah, I was raised in Clearvale. My mom's a scientist and she works with computers every day. She thinks everyone's going to be using them soon. You can do a lot more than just type or draw on them. If you want, I can show you some of the programs I've got on mine later."

Astrids eyes seemed to light up a little at that.

"She's a scientist? What field? My father is a polar researcher, he works a lot with American researchers."

She slid her chair closer, looking at the machine.

"We have time now yes?"

Laura entered the classroom later than most others. Her hair was covering her face and she was huffing like she had ran to beat the bell. She took the seat closest to the door and after placing her backpack on her desk rested her head on it.

"There are English Polkas, though." he shrugged. "I wouldn't be surprised if there were English Mariachi songs. I think it depends on what the song is about. The story."

"Like 'Beer Barrel,' you mean? Isn't that a translation?"

Sybil showed up casually late and sat down in whatever spot in the back she'd managed to snag as her regular spot. Then she started to take out a sketchpad and a set of colorful crayons; oblivious to her surroundings; and started working on band album cover art.

He shrugged. "I know little more about Polka than I do Mariachi. That's probably the best known Polka, but I'm sure I've heard others in English. Might just be Weird Al's stuff, though."

"Really? Does it matter? Ballads can be in any language." Mariana shrugged.

Mr.Lester Fisher made his way into the classroom rather late. "Sorry class... I was working something with the Sinew institute and it took longer than I thought. I have to prepare so you can keep on conversing.I will let you know when I am ready."

"Really? Does it matter? Ballads can be in any language." Mariana shrugged.

"I agree." he nodded. "As long as it's done in the spirit of the music, I think any language can be used."

Mariana nodded. "So mariachi in English can be a possibility. I can ..." Then the teacher spoke, the girl grew quiet and looked for her notebook.
